Vadoinmessico is Eurosonics prime ambassador

12 January 2012

Two Italians, a Mexican, a Brit and an Austrian: the organization couldn't wish for a better ambassador for a European festival. Don't be alarmed by pretentious, multicultural brouhaha, Vadoinmessico's prowess in songwriting and live-performance speaks for itself.

CONCERT

Vadoinmessico, Eurosonic, Vera, 11-01-2012

MUSIC

The single In Spain  presumably gives us reason to believe we're dealing with a watered down version of Crystal Fighters. The fact that both bands are harboured by PIAS and went on tour together, makes it all the more apparent. Those who came to see a frivoluos, happy-go-lucky band may be deceiving themselves. These London-based conservatory students carry a little too much musical and creative depth to be hopscotching around euphorically. Two Italians, a Mexican, a Brit and an Austrian explore the vast leftfield of indierock. Their album was engineered with Craig Silvy, who has collaborated with Portishead and Arcade Fire among others.

PLUS

The Dodos. That's the bandname that springs up after the first batch of songs. The cadence, the rapid rhythmic attack of acoustic guitars and rimshots. But fragments of Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah or Beck-like zaniness as well. With potent songwriting and spirited experimental endeavor as equilibrium, Vadoinmessicons rises head and shoulders above everyone else. The band swings and rejoices without excessive preachiness.

MINUS

The multi-cultural ensemble is coping with some technical problems. Vocalist Giorgio pins it on a badly tuned guitar. But there is more mumbling and jumbling going on. Eventually the gentlemen decide to cut it short. But fortunately, all in good fun. Keep your head up, since these guys will be back in a jiffy.

CONCLUSION

Musical ability without becoming a musical masterclass, that's a pretty rare thing nowadays. No big deal, since a subscription of Music Maker and The Guitarist is strictly optional. It's certainly breath of fresh air. Vadoinmessico may not be as immediately foot-tapping as alot of pop artists at this festival, but they capture an imaginitive, fresh sound with plenty of radiopotential to make a big splash.
